ADHD and Your Child

Understanding ADHD is an important first step in getting the right treatment for your child. Fortunately, because researchers are learning more about attention-deficit/ hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) all the time, more is now known about how to control symptoms and help children with ADHD to reach their potential.

ADHD, What is it?

SIGNS AND SYMPTOMS

The "core" symptoms of ADHD are hyperactivity, impulsivity, and inattention. There are nine typical behaviors or symptoms seen with inattention and nine often seen with hyperactivity/impulsivity.

Some of the symptoms of inattention include:
a. Failing to pay close attention to details, making careless mistakes in schoolwork.
b. Difficulty maintaining attention
c. Not following through on instructions and failing to finish tasks
d. Avoiding tasks that require sustained mental effort
e. often losing things necessary for school or other daily activities

ADHD is the most common childhood behavioral disorder, affecting the lives of nearly 8% of school-aged children. It's now understood that ADHD is not simply a matter of willpower, effort, or "trying a little harder." ADHD is a medical condition that can be successfully treated. ADHD is believed to be caused by an imbalance in two important "messengers" in the brain. This imbalance is thought to result in difficulties with
1. focussing
2.organizing and prioritizing work
3.filtering out or ignoring distractions
4.thinking before acting
5. Delaying gratification
